courage
room to breathe
desire
Have you ever thought about how a candle burns? Blue as it breathes in, gold as it lets go. The candle’s flame isn’t a thing, but an event, a reaction between fuel, breathing room, and a little spark.
The candle pulls the wax from its body and offers it up to flame as if to say, take this and make me you. It risks the burn to share its warmth and light. It would melt just to flicker while it can, illuminating the pages of your history.
For generations, the candle’s stood for hope and remembrance.
Even if the world’s gone dark, it doesn’t panic. It just keeps on burning, offering whatever it can to feed its flame and light the world again.
Every moment, you’re sitting at the edge of your future.
Right now could be the dawning of the most loving solutions to the problems you face. It could be the start of feeling strong, clear, and at home in yourself. All it takes is a little spark, a little breathing room, and the willingness to put everything you can into your fire.
You’ve felt it, haven’t you?
That little idea. The curiosity. A little friction, even.
Close your eyes. Find it in your body now, and stay there.
That’s your wild spirit calling, and it’s the spark that could start your fire. Don’t tune it out – let it turn up the heat.
Illumination requires combustion.
Fuel the beliefs you’d be willing to melt for.
Let hope flow through you like oxygen.
Mix belief and purpose, motivation and intention, drive and desire.
And put it in your fire.
You can be the slow burn that grows more powerful as you fine-tune the alignment between belief and action, or you could be the spontaneous combustion that takes the world by surprise. Either way, you can change your life, change the world even, starting right where you are now. In your own body, in your own living room, with your own people.
Let your light dance in the shadows.
In the last few years, I’ve figured out that there’s something in me worth nurturing. It’s the spark of hope when I fail, that steady conviction when no one gets what I’m doing, the reliable breath that anchors me to the truth of who I am.
Through trial and error, I’ve learned that when you find a little spark like that, you have to let it grow, and that takes intention. Attention. S p a c e. It means loving the part of me that’s scared, even when I’ve lost trust in myself and offering whatever I have to feed that little idea, even when it feels like I’m so far from where I want to be.
And in the last few years of journeying inward, I’ve created a series of visualizations and reflection questions that help me keep my inner fire burning. I’ve put them together in what I call the Beloved Flame Practice, and I want to share it with you.
This is the meditation and journal practice I use to call upon a healing, loving energy for myself and all beings. I use it when I’m feeling lost, fragile, or frozen. These are the questions that help me remember what it is I intend to do with this life, and these meditations bring me back to my truest self, open, loving, and certain of my natural connection to the world.
