Before, an excerpt from There, I Might Find Peace.
Before you told me who to be,
I wanted to be me.
Before you taught me what to change,
I wanted to be free.
Before you said to doubt myself,
I knew myself the best.
Now that I’ve done all that you asked,
I still fail to impress.
Before you drained my ocean heart
and burst my reverie,
before you stole from open hands
and shamed my wild dreams,
I spoke with music in my voice
and looked through painted eyes.
I danced in gentle raindrop steps
and sailed through dream-filled skies.
Before you spun your words as truth,
I knew what to believe,
and even though this took a while,
I’m not that easy to deceive.
So, before you say another word,
mock or punish me,
know that I still love myself
whether you do or don’t agree.
This moment marks the journey back
to who I was before.
May I remember what I knew
and live as me once more.
