When you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders and wondering whether you have anything to offer, do not underestimate the power of one.
When you’re a thousand miles from where you long to be and feel lost before you’ve started, do not doubt the impact of moving an inch.
And when you’re out on a limb, all by yourself, feeling small, do not forget how big things begin.
What I’m trying to say is, don’t confuse one with insufficient or small with weak. Alone and small are simply what it looks like to be at the beginning and on the verge of something big.
Every miraculous breakthrough, world-changing movement, stirring masterpiece, and heroic leader starts at one.
One person, one step, one idea, one word, one moment, one decision, one breath.
I’m beginning to think that Mother Nature planned it that way, and who am I to argue with her?
A single drop of water holds the power to nurture crops, shower fields, carve mountains, fill oceans, paint rainbows, smooth broken glass, and bring the world to life. In every stage of its life, however many times that single drop is reborn, it carries inside of it the ability shape the world. Whether hanging from a cloud, falling to the earth, or flowing through rivers, that little drop is powerful beyond measure.
And wherever it lands, a ripple follows.
Sound like anyone you know?
All by yourself, you too have the power to do some extraordinary things. You can nurture, create, love, heal, share, learn, lead, connect, dream, and make a difference simply by deciding to start at one.
Like the first time you hold your pain without forcing it away, the first time you think, “I owe it to myself to…” and then do it, and the first time you get quiet and follow your instincts – even if you have no idea where they’re trying to lead you.
That’s how knowing and loving yourself, healing, finding peace, and igniting a change begin. At one.
If you’re feeling like you’re just one person today, remember that you’re in the part of the story where one is the start of something spectacular. Each little step, little experiment, and little lesson combines to a whole that’s so much greater than the sum of its parts.
And when we join together? We’re as mighty as the sea.
If you’re feeling lost and aching over the state of the world, I made this for you:
